A new study suggests that the estrogen-sparing estrogen-alone treatment of Premarin, Prempro, and Prempro-comb may be linked.
The new research shows that estrogen-alone therapy may reduce the risk of anemia, heart disease, breast cancer and stroke.
This is the first study to link the use of estrogen-alone medications (alone, together or separate) with an increased risk of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and dementia.
The researchers, led by Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, found that taking estrogen-alone drugs (alone or together) significantly increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and death.
The study was published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine.
Dr. Shai Y. Lee, M. D., Ph. D.
Lee is an assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Lee has published several peer-reviewed articles in peer-reviewed journals on hormone therapy, cardiovascular medicine and other fields.
The new research is one of several in a new publication entitled "In the early stages of heart disease prevention with a combination of estrogen-alone and estrogens with the goal of reducing cardiovascular events".
In the study, Dr. Lee and other researchers enrolled healthy men and women with a history of heart disease (heart failure, coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, etc) and had a history of heart attack or stroke. They also had a history of breast cancer.
The researchers enrolled those who had an early history of heart failure or coronary artery disease and had at least one other risk factor such as hypertension, smoking and alcohol use. They followed them for 7 years to assess their cardiovascular risk. They then followed them for 5 years to assess their risk for developing heart disease.
Lee was not involved in the study. He did not take part in the study.
The researchers also enrolled women who had had a previous heart attack or stroke. The researchers had other risk factors including high cholesterol and smoking.
Lee and other researchers are working to better understand the role of estrogen in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. They are also looking at whether estrogen alone may be more effective.
The study, which has been peer reviewed by both the Journal of the American College of Physicians and the American Heart Association, was published in the journal
The researchers looked at all of the risk factors that were known to be associated with a positive hormone test: a previous heart attack, stroke, heart failure or blood clots. The researchers did not include any variables that may have an effect on those risk factors.
They also did not include in their analysis whether they had a history of breast cancer.
The researchers were unable to find a significant effect of estrogen on the risk of heart disease.
The researchers concluded:
The study results show that taking estrogen-alone or combined estrogen (alone or together) significantly increased the risk of a composite heart attack, heart failure and stroke by 2.6 times. This risk was not significantly different for the women who received estrogen alone or estrogen plus clomiphene citrate (CIL). There was no significant difference in the risk of these outcomes among the groups receiving estrogen plus clomiphene citrate.

The researchers reviewed the data on the estrogen-alone trials and found no significant differences between the groups in the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Generics offer fewer risks of side effects. The cost of generic drugs is around $.50 per month. However, generic drugs are considerably more expensive than the brand-name versions. Generic drugs are available in almost all regions of the world, and they are available in different formulations, including tablets, capsules, pessaries, and oral jelly[1][3].

Dominated drug-manufacturing industry will impact drug-use behavior. The lack of interaction between oral contraceptives and injectable birth control increases the likelihood of drug-drug interactions. Therefore, the consumption of medicines containing hormonal contraceptives, such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), may increase the risk of drug-drug interactions. Furthermore, prolonged use of contraceptives can increase the risk of blood clots[5].
